Anabel Dean

American author of children's novels. She has written a number of fictional and non-fictional titles. Perhaps her best known books are the Racing Wheels series about a motor racing mad boy. However she also wrote a similar series aimed more at the female market about a girl who likes horses rather than cars.

Mary and Duke Series:
Young adult series about a girl and her horse Duke who together try out a number of horsy discliplines. The girl is an older teen and in various books is working so it is suitable for older readers.

1) SADDLE UP

SUMMARY: Mary first sees the horse Duke at her friend's stable. She falls in love with him, but he may be sold before she can save up enough money to buy him.

2) JUNIOR RODEO
(BENEFIC [USA] 1975)
SUMMARY: Mary now owns Duke. She wants to train him to take part in barrel races to help win some money for her mother. But is disappointed when Duke does not prove suited to that sort of competition.

3) HIGH JUMPER
(BENEFIC [USA] 1975)
SUMMARY: When Duke jumps out of his field Mary decides he has aptitude as a jumper and starts to train him.

4) HARNESS RACE
(BENEFIC [USA] 1975)
SUMMARY: Mary is trying to find a summer job to pay for Duke's keep when she is away at college. She meets Miss Snow who owns a harness racing stable and gets involved in this new world.

5) STEEPLECHASE
(BENEFIC [USA] 1975)
SUMMARY: Mary trains Duke for a steeplechase but just before the race he is stolen!

6) RIDE THE WINNER
(BENEFIC [USA] 1975)
SUMMARY: Mary is now working at a racing stables and even gets a chance to ride in a race!

Collector's Info:
Reasonably easy to find in the USA. One or two titles may be a bit harder to find than others. The series is much harder to find elsewhere.
